LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Buguias held off Manakayan, 78-74, and assured itself of the seventh – place finish in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup – Benguet Basketball League Tuesday night at the Benguet Sports Complex here.
Karl Pangosban saved the day for Buguias, scoring seven of the team’s last 11 points to turn a single point advantage into 78-71 edge.
Pangosban ended with 11 points and backstopped Fernando Bacani, Jr., who scored four of his 17 points in that furious Buguias end game.
The league’s number two scorer, Lindon de Guzman tried in vain to rally his team including two closing three points, but he and the Mankayan team ran out of time.
Buguias started like a house on fire as it led by as much as 10 and ending the first period enjoying a 24-14 lead.
De Guzman and Adrian Sison then joined forces anew to give Mankayan a fight back that saw them trim the lead to seven, 40-33, at half time.
Mankayan pressed on as it narrowed the deficit to only three at the end of the third, 52-49, after coming close to a single marker and possibly take the lead.
A fumble that left Joni Jorgs Balucas free for a lay-up at the other end for the final score of the quarter.
Mankayan started hotly as it took command of the game but Buguias got another wind and extended the lead to eight, 65-57.
Hacley Gateley then scored five to lead a 7-0 Mankayan run to make it a one – point Buguias lead, 67-66.
Bacani took the best player honors anew after adding 11 boards, dished four assists, took two steals and a block. Mark Mamolang tied Bacani with 17 markers and added nine boards.
Jerry Olsim had a game high 17 rebounds while scoring eight markers.
De Guzman led all scorers with 22, while Sison added 15 markers.
Buguias improved to 6-5 win-loss to clinch the seventh seed with a game remaining against Tublay, while Mankayan remained at eighth spot with two more games remaining, against Kabayan and Kibungan.
Meanwhile, the two scheduled games on Thursday featuring the highly anticipated Kabayan versus Tuba and Sablan opposite Kapangan are cancelled because of an upcoming provincial event.
In an announcement posted in the organizer and coordinators group chat, league commissioner Roderick Osis made the announcement that games scheduled January 16 will be cancelled in “preparation for the upcoming Healthier Benguet Caravan.” CEGYCC Release
