Trigger Warning:
This column may talk on toxicity and a few experiences on a mental illness – schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. In case some of these facts may trigger you, I suggest you forego reading or connect with the City Mental Health Services – Mental Health and Wellness Unit at 0919-069-6361 or the Department of Health – Cordillera Mental Health at 0938-747-6458 or the Baguio General Hospital (BGH) – Psychiatry Department at (074) 442-2365.
“Mental health and technology may or may not go together? In a world that’s harsh, let’s try to be mindful of others. Let’s empathize.”
I have been an avid follower of pages and websites and a lot of times, I realize that the moderators don’t filter the comments even when they are too harsh. Maybe because they don’t have time or maybe the same is a cause for more comments. Sometimes I say to myself, “Are diagnosed people crazy or maybe the people who hurt and don’t empathize and become harsher to people with psychosocial disabilities are crazier?” Beats me!
Sometimes, I don’t know how to react in these circumstances, but with patience, I guess things could go a long way. Unless, of course, I am super triggered. Then, I remember that what I have control of is limited to my actions and that my reactions are irrelevant because it’s not about me really but about how people see themselves.
In a world where technology is rampant, spread cheer and love. It’s hard really, even in my own experiences, but it’s still a matter of trying every time.
Even Reddit, Quora or local pages like the Igorot TV or Arteks of Lakandula have made significant bashing and toxicity as postings or were in turn, were bashed based on postings also. As a person with lived experiences of toxicity, I usually unfollow pages and people regardless of FOMO (fear of missing out) – a word of the Gen Z’s?.
I once even let go of watching news and listening to news. It creates more chaos and unrealistic views within my mind. A cycle of like they are coming after me or something.
Technically, let’s make media simpler. In dealing with everything let’s all be responsible people. Let’s not add to the warfare happening in people’s heads. Let’s be kind. Let’s fact-check. Let’s fill the screens with good vibes and all.
The world now has its own challenges. The typhoon has lost us many things – lives, livelihood, houses and stuff. The simple things that make us human enough are the same things that make us resilient. May this resilience help you through as you go further.
All in all, let’s be responsible and help each other, the Philippines is struggling in many things and many ways – let’s find the Filipino light that shines within.
Let your light shine from within, so that it becomes so overbearing so as to change the community and someday the world – one step at a time!
