LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Even without Kim Padawag, Itogon managed to eke a 108-97 win over Tuba in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Benguet Basketball League at the Benguet Sports Complex here Saturday.
“Though Kim is not without us due to some family matters, there are five of us who can be the starters,” said big man Chad Villanueva, who used his height and heft to lead his team with 21 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists aside from a single steal and block.
The four others actually scored in double digits with Michael Dannang leading all scorers with 22 points, while pulling down a game high 20 boards.
Jan Rae Ganilo and Sachi Caballero added 16 markers each with the former pulling down 10 boards, while Lenz Antolino added 14 markers.
“We blended well in the second half as we were able to read each other, know when to pass and pulled the needed rebounds,” summed Villanueva, who as the most senior Itogon player motivated his younger teammates.
“Just play and forget the calls, even if it went against us,” said the former University of the Cordilleras big man, who was seen writhing on the floor on several occasions.
Villanueva said that his team will definitely finish better this time with Kabayan and Kapangan as their remaining opponents. Itogon is tied with La Trinidad with a 9-1 win-loss slate but the defending champion remains on top with its three – point victory over the mining town team.
Cyril de Vera once again led Tuba with 22 as he hauled 17 rebounds as well for the team’s only double-double performance.
Tuba emulated the winning team as Syrick Banana added 21 points and Nelvin Turtoga added nine markers.
Jervie Calivo came short of a double-double with nine points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
It was the third defeat of Tuba in 11 games, the other two losses came at the hands of Bokod and La Trinidad. CEGYCC Release
