Grumpy Joe takes early lead in 18th CJH Corporate Cup

Jonar Austria fired 54 points, Oscar Gallo contributed 45 and Von Vargas added 42 as Grumpy Joe zoomed to a five-point lead over defending champion Forest Hills-Megafiber in Group 1 of the 18th Camp John Hay Corporate Cup on Wednesday.

With the 27 of Benedict Fernandez not counted for the day under the four-to-play, three-to-count format, Grumpy Joe amassed 141 points while Forest Hills-Megafiber, which is seeking a third straight title in the premier division, tallied a 136.

“We have to play a lot better today and score at least 150 to reach our target,” said Raymond Bunquin captain of FH, also backed by Mileage Asia and Jac Liner, which drew a 49 from Iñigo Raymundo, Dennis Nicomedes a 44 and James Bryan Gosiaco a 43.

Host CJH Golf Club (133), KT Glass (131), MRT (122) and Hoher (122) completed the top five in the event presented by The Manor and Forest Lodge at Camp John Hay, Le Chef, Moto Industrial Traders, Grumpy Joe and Mount Banoy Security Agency.

Philip Punla, meanwhile shot the tournament’s second hole-in-one at No. 13 while playing in the company of Albert Florido, Arturo Tuazon and Robin Tamera and stands to win the P50,000 cash prize. Punla used a PXG Gen4 9-iron and Callaway Ball #3.

Another team that put together a wonderful game was Mountaineers as Cliff Empiso (47), Sonny Mangaoang (45) and Jaime Ramirez (44) combined for 136 points to lead the way in Group 2. Avanti Transport and James Wright Café were tied at 126 apiece. NLMonitor
