Fearless Highlanders guns for improved finish

Pinning its hopes anew in combative sports and other individual sports, Cordillera Fearless Highlanders are poised to improve their ninth place finish when the Palarong Pambansa kicks off next month in Cebu City.

With taekwondo raking in eight out of the total of 17 gold, including 17 silver and 14 bronze medals at the close of the 2023 Palarong Pambansa, the Fearless Highlanders went up one rung higher to ninth place at the Palarong Pambansa in Marikina City from its previous 10th place in 2019.

Edgar Madlaing, chief education supervisor of the Department of Education in the Cordillera said the 463 athletes, with bulk of them coming from Baguio are all geared up for the national sports meet slated July 11 to 15.

Handang – handa naang mga delegates. Excited and mga coaches and athletes,” said Madlaing.

Aside from the athletes, there will be 120 coaches and chaperons, 93 members of the technical working group, 15 DepEd officials and 15 officials from the different local government units that comprise the region will also be joining the delegation.

DepEd – CAR regional director Estela Cariño meanwhile said the athletes are currently training under their respective divisions in preparation for the annual national games.

“Kaya per school ang teams to make it easier for them to practice because we cannot call these athletes to come for training without their coaches,” Cariño added.

The Department of Education (DepEd) meanwhile on Thursday inspected the Cebu City Sports Center to ensure that preparations for the Palarong Pambansa are on track.

Assistant Secretary Francis Cesar Bringas said the contractors rehabilitating the sports center as Palaro’s main venue this year assured her that their repair works were proceeding as scheduled.

The organizing committee, the official said, would have a final technical conference so that all the tournament directors could be briefed about the development.

Bringas lauded the city government for its satisfactory preparation despite the change in leadership caused by the six-month preventive suspension issued against Mayor Michael Rama due to a case pending before the Office of the Ombudsman. Roderick Osis
