The city’s 10th Ecological Solid Waste Management and Sustainability fair at Malcolm Square in the morning of April 27 shall be done in collaboration with the Environmental Management Board regional office (EMB – CAR), in celebration of earth day with the theme, “Our Power, Our Planet.”
The event is highlighted with a recyclable collection event (RCE) participated in by barangays, schools and community where the criteria for evaluation includes the total volume of collected recyclables (40 points), proper segregation and handling practices where points are deducted for mixed or dirty recyclables (20 pts.), community participation and mobilization of residents, youth, women, brgy officials and volunteers (20 pts.), and complete documentation (20 pts.).
This was the information from Mark Anthony Solano, Chief of Ecological Waste Management (EWM) Environmental Management Board (EMB-Department of Environment and Natural Resources) in a preparatory meeting, attended by General Services Office (GSO) head Eugene Buyucan, City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) assistant head Engr. Marivic Empizo and representatives from other agencies.
The recyclables such as plastics, glass bottles, jars, PET bottles, sachets, aluminum and tin cans, newspapers, white paper scrap metals, and Karton (corrugated brown packaging paper) shall be weighed, recorded and scored by evaluators from the General Services Office (GSO), EMB-CAR, CEPMO, and Zero Waste Baguio, earlier in the morning. These shall be bought by junk shop owners and their representatives, on site.
The champion in the recyclables collection shall receive Five thousand Pesos (P5,000); while P3,000 and P1,500.00 shall be given to the second and third place, respectively. The winners shall be given certificates of commendation.
Solano has announced that special awards are available for “basura warriors,” “the young once,” “ecological youth,” “early bird,” and “clean-up eco-warrior.” Eco-bags and five-kilo rice packs shall also be raffled off during the program.
Messages of support shall be given by city officials, environmental leaders and advocates, including DENR Regional Executive Director Engr. Paquito Moreno, EMB Regional Director Engr. Jean Borromeo, Mayor Benjamin Magalong, and Chief EMED, EMB-CAR Engr. Raul Cubangay.
Tree seedling distribution, e-waste collection, smoke-emission testing, refilling station (Tingi) and Information and Education Campaign (IEC) booths shall still be conducted along Session road during the day, with a ladies’ Eco-fashion show, where organic, recycled and recreated attires shall be showcased. – Baguio City Public Information Office
