Saint Louis University (SLU) has launched a campaign, Feb. 27, aimed at promoting the proper disposal of electronic waste in collaboration Smart Communications, PLDT, the City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO), and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The campaign hopes to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and responsible e-waste management among its students and the community.
By encouraging the practice of proper disposal and recycling, they hope to reduce the environmental impact of discarded electronic devices.
According to CEPMO, the Summer Capital is home to the first e-waste facility in the Cordillera region and the third facility of its kind in the entire country.
It is located in Bakakeng Central barangay and the facility has collected a total of 4,146 kilograms of e-wastes from March 1, 2024 to February 21, this year.
April Kagaoan, a sustainability executive and representative from Smart, stressed the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility where it is not just a service provider or electronics manufacturer but also an advocate for proper e-waste disposal.
She added that through this initiative, they encourage customers and community partners to participate in responsible recycling practices.
CEPMO deputy head Marivic Empizo highlighted the important role educational institutions play in promoting sustainability and that Baguio, as the Educational Center of the North, students can help drive change by practicing responsible e-waste disposal.
Instead of mixing electronic waste with general trash, which can be harmful to both health and the environment, students can contribute to better waste management, she added.
Empizo said this initiative serves as a step forward in making Baguio a greener and more sustainable place.- Baguio Public Information Office
