City, DA eye put up of agriculture, fisheries network

The city council adopted resolution no. 594, series of 2024, granting authority to Mayor Benjamin Magalong, representing the city government, to enter into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office-Cordillera Administrative Region (DA-RFO-CAR), Agricultural Training Institute-Regional Training Center-CAR (ATI-RTC-CAR), and other member institutions, for the establishment of an “Agriculture and Fisheries Resources, Research and Extension for Development Network (AFRREDN)” in the region.

It shall serve as a partnership mechanism for stakeholders of agriculture and fisheries resources, extension, research, and development.

“Establishing AFRREDN is a significant step towards enhancing the agricultural and fisheries sectors. By collaborating with the DA and other member institutions of the network, the city government of Baguio can leverage its expertise, resources, and support to achieve the shared goals of improving food security, increasing farmers’ and fisheries’ income, and promoting sustainable practices,” the measure stated.

Republic Act No. 8435, or the “Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act of 1997”, aims to modernize the agriculture and fisheries sectors and improve the living conditions  of farmers and fisherfolk, increase their productivity and competitiveness towards a food and nutrition-secure Philippines.

The AFRREDN shall serve as the major partnership mechanism for agriculture and fisheries Research for Development and Extension (R4DE) programs stakeholders such as national government agencies, state colleges and universities, local government units, and private institutions as well as farmers cooperatives and institutions.

The approved resolution states that the MOU shall be submitted to the local legislature for confirmation. Baguio City Public Information Office
