Mayor Benjamin Magalong ratified city council resolution no. 599, series of 2024, expressing profound congratulations and commendations to the Baguio Water District (BWD) for being recognized as one of the World’s Climate Smart Utilities in the Achiever Category during the “3rd International Water Association (IWA) World Water Congress and Exhibition 2024” held August 11 to 15, this year, in Toronto Canada.
The event brought together stakeholders and key contacts within the core water sector and beyond and is a platform with a worldwide membership.
It included the IWA Climate Smart Utilities Recognition Program that aims to raise awareness of the steps being undertaken by water and sanitation utilities operating in challenging conditions to respond to climate change.
This year, the program expanded its scope and opportunities for recognition, aiming to increase awareness of the mitigation, adaptation, and leadership potential among water utilities worldwide.
The IWA received 92 applications from around the world for recognition but only 28 were recognized as Climate Smart. Of these, 16 were considered for the Entrant category in the early stages while 12 utilities demonstrating substantial progress were honored in the Achiever category including the BWD which received a Certificate of Recognition for the achievement.
The BWD, in response to the increasing challenges of climate change, has invested in updated and highly technical water treatment technologies, energy efficiency measures, renewable energy, and the responsible use and protection of the environment through conservation efforts and sustainable practices.
“The BWD has prioritized its journey towards climate change resilience and water security,” the approved resolution stated.
The measure added: “The city government of Baguio is immensely proud of this recognition bestowed upon the city’s lone water utility. Baguio Water District stands for better service through modern technology, conscientious utilization of natural resources, and innovative programs for the benefit of the city of Baguio, its people, and the environment.” Baguio City Public Information Office
