Bokod holds off furious Tublay, seeks top four in CEGYCC caging

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Bokod came from eight points down early in the first canto but had another second quarter explosion to beat Tublay, 101 – 87, and move within one game away from clinching a top four spot in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup – Benguet Basketball League Tuesday at the Benguet Sports Complex here.

It was a very slow start for Bokod which was dazzled by the speed employed by Tublay with three of its guards and shortest players on court had them gasping for breath. Charlton Dagwasi and Prado Domerez, Jr. opened the game with a 10-2 run, but Bokod found its rhythm to take a 25-24 lead at the end of the first quarter.

From there, Bokod used defense to start the second canto with a 6-0 run for a 31-24 lead. However, Domerez hit two from long distance to take a 32-31 lead.

Bokod struggled to get its rhythm but started to pull away and take a 60-46 lead at halftime.

When Nestor Cuilan split his charities early in the third, Bokod took its biggest lead at 67-46, but Domerez unleashed another from rainbow country to make it an 18-point Bokod lead.

Domerez drilled another in the ensuing possession as Bokod’s lead was cut further to 15, 67-52.

Tublay was able to stop Bokod from making another run by then as the lead never went beyond 18. Tublay even cut this to 10, but it was the least it was the closest it could get as Bokod took its eighth win in 11 games.

Bokod now ties Tuba at fourth to fifth spot with both still having a game left.

Bokod has defending champion La Trinidad as its last opponent and they will play on Saturday where the former needs to win to secure the last top four spot.

“We are getting there, but we have to be better at defense,” said Shane Balnges who led Bokod anew with 18 markers and 10 rebounds.

“It was where we failed in the first quarter, we started slow on defense and suffered the consequence,” he added in Filipino.

Nestor Cuilan had 13 points and 11 rebounds, June Rey Buenavista added 11 and 10 points and rebounds, while Roy Pulac contributed 10 markers in the game.

Domerez had its best performance with 34 points on eight from long distance, while  Dagwasi added 16 markers as Tublay finished its campaign with a game remaining against Buguias and a 4-7 card.

Buguias (5-5) was leading Mankayan (4-5) 21-12 as of this writing as the two teams battle for the seventh spot. CEGYCC Release
