Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President John Rhey Mananeng has proposed an ordinance seeking to make the Baguio Day Darts Tournament a permanent feature of the city’s annual celebration and allocate funds for its organization and related training activities.
Under the measure, the Baguio Day Darts Tournament shall be formally integrated into the annual Baguio Day celebration and conducted as a regular city event. The proposal recognizes darts as a sport already included in the city’s Comprehensive Sports Development Code and seeks to provide a sustained platform for local players, enthusiasts, and clubs to participate in organized competition.
The ordinance outlines several objectives including providing opportunities for darts players to showcase their skills, conducting darts clinics for amateur and aspiring athletes, encouraging participation from barangays, schools, and community organizations, and promoting Baguio City as a venue for diverse sports and recreational activities. It also aims to strengthen community spirit by incorporating the sport into one of the city’s major celebrations.
To oversee the tournament, the measure proposes the creation of a Baguio Day Darts Tournament Executive Committee. The committee shall be composed of the City Administrator, the Chairperson of the Committee on Youth and Sports Development and/or the President of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, the City Sports and Recreation Division Officer, three representatives from the Cordillera Darts League, and representatives from the Health Services Office, Emergency Medical Services, and the City Tourism Office.
The proposed ordinance also provides for an annual appropriation of P100,000.00 to be sourced from the City’s Sports Development Fund, subject to existing accounting and auditing rules and regulations. The amount shall be used to support the conduct of the tournament and related activities.
Furthermore, the Executive Committee shall be tasked with drafting the implementing rules and regulations necessary for the conduct of the tournament. The proposed rules shall be submitted to the Sangguniang Panlungsod for approval.
In his explanatory note, Mananeng said institutionalizing the tournament shall ensure its continuity and sustainability while reaffirming the City Government’s support for sports development. He noted that the Baguio Day Darts Tournament has been conducted annually since 2016 and has become part of the city’s sports calendar, attracting participants from across Northern Luzon and contributing to community engagement and tourism.
The proposed ordinance was approved on first reading by the Baguio City Council on June 22, 2026 and was subsequently referred to the Committee on Youth Welfare and Sports Development for review. – Baguio City – Sangguniang Panlungsod
