The Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) recorded an increase in vehicular accidents by 24.90 percent from January 1 to April 30, 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
BCPO records show an increase in vehicular traffic incidents (VTIs) from 253 last year to 316 this year covering the first five months of each period.
Majority of the accidents were cases categorized as reckless imprudence resulting to damage to property – 201 last year increased to 262 this year; reckless imprudence resulting to homicide – 3 last year which increased to 5 this year; and reckless imprudence resulting to physical injuries – 49 last year and same figure this year.
Four-wheeled vehicles comprised most of the VTIs recorded from 189 last year to 246 this year or an increase of 30.16 percent.
Meanwhile, VTIs involving motorcycles also increased from 64 last year to 70 this year or an increase of 9.38 percent.
Disregarding traffic signs and disobeying traffic personnel were among the issues identified affecting driving attitudes causing vehicular incidents as well as unfamiliarity of road terrain for visitors as well as uncoordinated infrastructure projects.
Some of those involved in traffic accidents were also found unfit to drive being under the influence of liquor.
Earlier, Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong has ordered the mapping of roads with prevalent VTIs for appropriate interventions to be incorporated in his administration’s Smart Mobility goal. – Baguio City Public Information Office
