Tuba nips Atok, fortifies QF bid in CEGYCC

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Radinka Dumawor and Mary Ann Atuban were the 1-2 punch as they knocked out Atok in three sets, 25-22, 25-11, 27-25, as they bounced back to a four – set defeat to Kapangan in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Sunday at the Benguet Sports Complex here.

The former University of the Cordilleras High School volleyball team member Dumawor and former University of Baguio stalwart Atuban struck 16 and 14 points, respectively as they powered Tuba to its sixth win in nine encounters.

Dumawor, a product of the ABCAmp, had 12 attack points and four aces to lead the team for the second time and win top honors, while Atuban, who had 27 points in a losing effort to Kapangan, had 12 attack points and two kills.

Shania Pronton had nine points on eight attack points and an ace, while Margaret Bendanillo chipped eight on 5 attack points and three aces in the 64 minutes encounter that nearly went for a fourth set after Atok rallied from 19-23 to serve at set point, 25-24 before Tuba woke up.

“We were too relaxed at that point. But then we won’t let the win slip away,” said Dumawor, now a third-year criminology student at UC.

Aimee Galao led Atok with 10 markers on nine attack points and a single ace and she came back after missing three games to rally her team which benefitted from the miscues of Tuba.

Tuba had 13 unforced errors alone, thus the narrow win, while giving up four only in the second set for the 11 points they allowed for Atok.

The last set was a nip and tuck as Tuba committed 14 unforced errors and two service errors resulting to the close victory.

Tuba momentarily improved to third spot with three more games remaining, all must win, against Mankayan, Bakun, Itogon, two of which are easy wins except for the last, which is desperately fighting for survival for the top four spot.

Itogon will meet Tublay later in the day to keep its flickering hope alive.

Atok fell to 3-8 for 10th spot and has one game remaining against the league’s top seed – Sablan.

Bokod and Kibungan are playing as of this writing.  CEGYCC Release
