LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Powerhouse Sablan unleashed three youngsters and exploded to beat Buguias, even as La Trinidad completed the five-game opening schedule with a convincing win over Atok Sunday in the Benguet Sports Complex in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Benguet Women’s V-League.
The reigning Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic League most valuable player Jasmynne Joyce Polon of the Baguio College of Technology collected 15 points on 11 attacks, three service aces and a block to lead Sablan to a 25-13, 25-11, 25-16 win over Buguias in just 56 minutes of play.
La Trinidad, meanwhile, was also devastating as it crushed Atok 25-3, 25-13, 25-9, in a longer time of 78 minutes. All 15 players were utilized in the game with no player getting more than five points on attacks. Kate Gacad was named player of the game with only six points, five of which were service aces.
The two squads thus joined Itogon, Kapangan and Tuba as opening day winners that were all done in three sets.
Sablan’s 56-minute victory over Buguias however did not top the 52 minute victory of new arch rival Kapangan which needed 52 minutes to waylay Kibungan, allowing the latter to score 14, 12 and 16 in the three sets.
But it was Trinidad that set the lowest allowed points at three, topping the six points Itogon allowed for Mankayan during the opening match.
“It is a long way yet. We need yet to gel,” said Trinidad coach Jhon Patrick Garcia, who was recently Mankayan’s mentor.
“I was asked to coach the team and since I am really from here so I accepted,” said Garcia, who all saw improvements in all the teams that played Sunday which has players that previously played for another other team.
Sablan coach Edrix Jofla, echoed Garcia’s observation. Although he could have the best talents in the new league, lot of works is needed to find the proper gelling.
Ther former Benguet State University Wildcat, who only played one season due to the Covid-19 pandemic, added that he looks forward to seeing the team bloom especially with the addition of Polon, middle Sheryl Mae Estal and Abigail Cunanan, all from the reigning BBEAL champion BCT. CEGYCC Release
