Pasig pips Baguio for Batang Pinoy crown

Baguio City’s four year dominance in the Batang Pinoy National Championships came to halt as Pasig City stormed the competition with 105 gold, 64 silver and 116 bronze to claim the over-all title in the tournament for all youths aged 17 and below.

Pasig sent a total of 771 athletes, dominated swimming, where it won 11 gold, 9 silver and 11 bronze for 31 medals while it also collected more golds in 29 other contested sports to break its streak of finishing second to the stripped City of the title.

Baguio City came in second with 92-72-89 (gold-silver-bronze) for a total of 253 medals while Quezon City came in third with 59-55-53=167 medals. Davao City came in fourth with 39-44-37=120 and General Santos City came in fifth with 36-30-40=106 medals.

Baguio City Sports Administration chief Gaudencio Jimenez Gonzales expressed gratitude for coming in second after surpassing their medal tally last year.

“It was a good fight. Mas mataas po ang medal output natin ngayon kumpara last year na may kabuoang 92 golds, 72 silvers, 89 Bronzes: 253 total,” sabi ni Gonzales.

The City of Pasig will take home the P5-million incentive for being the champion while Baguio will get P4-million. Quezon City already has P3-million while Davao has P2-million. General Santos has P1-million.

“Ano man ang resulta o pumangalawa man tayo ngayong taon at di makamit ang 5-peat Overall Championship ay masaya at proud pa rin tayo kasi alam nating lumaban ang Team Baguio hanggang sa huling araw ng laro sa Team Pasig na mula umpisa ay nagunguna na sa ranking,” added Gonzales.

Wushu, Muay Thai, and archery nonce again bankrolled Baguio’s performance in the weeklong sports event held in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

Wushu had a field day with 18 gold medals including seven silvers and eight bronze medals while Muay Thai brought home 13-11-9 gold-silver-bronze medals respectively.

Archery meanwhile ws on target as they took home 14 gold medals while saving 18 silvers and six bronze.

Benguet Province meanwhile made a huge improvement in the competition placing 15th over-all after bagging 16 golds, 12 silver and 33 bronze medals.

Wrestlers carried the province with four golds, three silvers, and two bronze medals with kickboxing adding three golds, four silvers and four bronzes while Jujitsu grabbed three golds, one silver, and two bronzes and Muay Thai bringing home three golds and nine bronzes. Roderick Osis
