Paglilitis is a 90-minute examination of trauma, power dynamics, and the reality that a trial for justice now takes place not just in a courtroom, but in the court of public opinion.
‘Paglilitis’ (A Trial), a full-length film directed by Cheska Marfori, dives deep into the complex aftermath of workplace sexual harassment, exploring how the pursuit of justice intersects with the volatile landscape of modern social media.
The story centers on Jonalyn Samuel (played by Rissey Reyes-Robinson), a former executive assistant who has lived in quiet recluse, haunted by years of pervasive sexual harassment at the hands of her wealthy and powerful ex-boss, the CEO of a major corporation. A passionate lawyer (played by Eula Valdez) persuades a reluctant Jonalyn that the “woke generation” offers a crucial opportunity for justice, prompting her to finally file a case.
Initially, Jonalyn finds strength and hope in the overwhelming support she receives online. Her story sparks a viral movement, providing an assurance that times have indeed changed. However, the film takes a sharp turn as the very platform that initially uplifted her quickly becomes a toxic space. The tide of public opinion turns, and Jonalyn’s narrative is manipulated, presenting her not as a victim seeking accountability, but as a “heartless perpetrator” attempting to exploit a respected figure.
Director Cheska Marfori is known for work that addresses women’s struggles amid generational shifts—a theme powerfully evident in Paglilitis past projects includes the award-winning short film Ang Gasgas na Plaka ni Lolo Bert, winning the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 2024, was penned by Raymund Barcelon.
