Newly crowned Miss Universe Philippines – Mt. Province Lyneree Wly Montero-Yodong is looking forward to turn the pageant spotlight toward the preservation of Cordillera’s indigenous weaving traditions.
Montero-Yodong, the first-ever candidate to represent the province on the Miss Universe Philippines stage, dedicated her crown to her community during a media launch Sunday, Feb. 8. Her campaign centers on a critical cultural challenge: the dwindling number of young people entering the traditional weaving industry.
“This is a great, remarkable milestone, not only for Mountain Province but also for Cordillera,” Montero-Yodong said. “Because I believe that when one woman from Cordillera rises, all women from Cordillera rise with her.”
The titleholder plans to use the national platform to advocate for sustainable heritage. By showcasing local designs during the competition, she aims to increase global demand for authentic textiles while ensuring the economic benefits reach the artisans directly.
“It would be nice to have a platform where we can teach the younger generations and we would be able to champion our weaves on the national stage,” she said.
Montero-Yodong, who previously held the title of Miss Universe Philippines-Benguet Tourism in late 2025, emphasized that her journey is less about personal gain and more about the “sustainable demand” for local craftsmanship. She noted that her goal is to bridge the gap between ancient artistry and modern commerce.
She is scheduled to begin her official duties on Feb. 16 at “The First Walk” event, where she will join other national delegates. Organizers have yet to announce the date for the coronation night. Caryl Sumulong and Kyla Macapanas/UP Baguio intern
