Kapangan, Tuba join Itogon in win column in Cong. Yap Cup women’s v-league

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Two of the higher seeds walked away with easy wins on day one of the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup Benguet Women’s V – League at the Benguet Sports Complex Sunday.

Kapangan needed just 52 minutes to defeat Kibungan 25-14, 25-12, 25-16 even as an undermanned Tuba had enough firepower to outclass Bokod, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 in just 66 minutes to take their first wins and join Itogon in the win bracket.

“There are a lot of adjustment needed for us to compete against the top seed (Sablan), we need all our top guns to be here,” said Kapangan coach Danilo Edwardo with Governor’s Cup most valuable player Dezsrae Monang still wearing a foot brace when she arrived at the venue.

Kate Payang top scored for Tuba with 16 points on 16 attacks to lead the demolition job against Bokod in the third game.  ABCAmp alumna Radinka Dumawor finished with 13 on 11 attacks and three service aces.

The University of the Cordilleras Senior High School student made up for the absence of former University of Baguio standout Mary Anne Atuban who failed to report because like many of the other players are seeing action in the Inter-Barangay.

“We still need to gel and we missed the other players who are playing in the Inter-Barangay,” said Tuba coach Billyshae Narciso.

Earlier, Itogon needed just 59 minutes to finish off northern rival Mankayan to start their bid with Reynae Arances and Julie Odlos scored 12 and 11 points respectively to power the southern mining town for a 25-5, 25-15, 25-17 win.

Arances and Odlos and the starting unit sat out the second set as the second unit took care of business and was behind 5-8 before the unit found their chemistry to take the set in 21 minutes.

Itogon gave up 14 unforced errors and three service errors and just gave up a point on attack by Mankayan.

Arances, who now works for the Benguet Electric Cooperative, is a product of Baguio City National High School and was a member of the University of the Cordillera Lady Jaguars before he graduated in 2019.

“So far the team is great and we will try our best to beat the top teams,” said Arances.

They are looking forward to meeting Tuba, which has high school buddy Mary Anne Atuban in its line-up, among others. She also hopes to help avenge Itogon’s defeat to Tuba in the battle for third in the Governor’s Cup last June.

Against Kapangan and top seed Sablan, Arances said, with a shrug, that they will do their best efforts to win. NLMonitor
