Bokod deals LT1 first loss, takes command of Yap Cup

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Bokod assumed sole leadership of the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup with a hard earned 83-77 win over La Trinidad 1 at the municipal gym here Thursday night.

It was a battle of the league’s strongest teams and a meeting of former opposing collegiate players with Trinidad’s Armando Pollante taking on the Buenaventura brothers, June Rey and John Rick.

John Ric led Bokod with 22 markers but it was Darwin Fernandez who gave the biggest impact late in the game with his sniping from outside. He made 18 markers on top of nine rebounds, two assists and a single steal.

“(Our) coach told me to be just confident in my shooting which I did,” said the former Cordillera Career Development College guard.

“Breaks of the game, we were able to anticipate their move and able to convert it,” said captain Jovencio Caleno who added 15 markers, the same output of Rey Gabino.

June Rey, meanwhile scored only four points but had 17 rebounds, two assists, three steals and a lone block.

Bokod took an early four – point lead, 10-6, but Trinidad 1 found its rhythm as it went on to take a four point lead, 21-17, at the end of the first quarter.

It was a Trinidad show practically in the second canto as it led by as much as eight before Bokod trimmed it to a 37-34 halftime lead.

Trinidad 1 started the third frame with a 5-0 run for a nine point lead, 43-34. But John Ric and Gabino made it a five-point affair after their respective baskets.

Tied at 66-all with 4:01 remaining, Will Kean Lee made it 68-66 for Trinidad 1 with 3:40 remaining.

The brothers made it a 70-68 lead with back-to-back baskets and 2:40 remaining in the game with Gabino scoring for an 18-footer jumper for 72-68 Bokod lead with 2:04 remaining as the Ambuklao based squad never looked back and seal their sixth win in as many games.

Itogon meanwhile peaked in the second canto and cruise control of the game to beat Sablan, 96-79, for its sixth win and sole third spot.

Reserve center Zannie Liquigan came out strong for the undermanned Itogon in the second quarter, which only had 11 players, as he powered his way for the hoop and an extra freebie for eight points to give Itogon a 45-31 lead from a measly 22-21 first quarter advantage.

Julius Mancio exploded with 26 points to lead Itogon while Kurt Ciano led Sablan with 18, while Wilfredo Garoy and Shontogan added 14 and 11 points, respectively.

In other games, Kapangan also pulled off a hard-earned win in their home turf Thursday nigth for a 3-3 slate edging winless Kibungan (0-5), 90-76.

Adam Clee Paraan churned in 17 markets on top of six rebounds, two assists and a single steal with Nelson Estepa nearly making it a double-double performance with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Marc Candido and Virgilio Evangelista, Jr. alternately took charge of the visiting Bakun’s offensive thrust as they scored double doubles to lead their team in an upset win over Tublay, 74-70, at the newly refurbished Kapangan municipal court Tuesday night.

Winless after three games, Candido led Bakun wioth 24 points including 14 boardas on top of his four assists and seven steals while Evangelista added 10, aside from four steals and a block. Roderick Osis
