Yap gifts Benguet athletes with cash incentives

Some 60 Benguet athletes are P147,000 richer following the release of their incentives from the Office of Congressman Eric Go Yap.

The Benguet solon on Tuesday released the cash awards in a simple ceremony to all medalists in the Batang Pinoy and Philippine National games held December last year with the gold medalists taking home P5,000 while the silver and bronze medalists received P2,000 and P1,000 respectively.

“Proud ako sa mga atleta nating taga – Benguet, tinalo pa natin ang mga ibang lugar na mas malaki ang budget sa sports,” said Yap.

Yap said although cash incentives may be meager as compared to other local government units, recognizing and rewarding sporting achievements reflects the dedication and resilience of Benguet athletes.

The solon has been consistently encouraging and helping Benguet athletes since his assumption as a lawmaker for the province.

Prior to the competition in December, Yap immediately organized a support initiative to ensure that athletes of the province have the resources to compete at their best.

Yap arranged transportation for Benguet delegates by providing a coaster that ferried them from the province to Pasig and back.

He also rented 11 vehicles for a day due to the transport strike in Metro Manila on Dec. 18.

Yap also provided additional meals for the athletes and delegates, and supplied energy drinks to keep them in top form throughout the duration of the events.

Having engaged in discussions with coaches who once wore the same shoes as their proteges, Yap recognized the financial strain of aspiring athletes saying the lack of adequate financial backing not only affects training but also hampers the overall development of potential sports stars.

“Sa mga athletes ng Benguet huwag kayong susuko, kahit na ang palaro natin ay nagkaroon ng konting setback dahil may kanya-kanyang reason, pero kahit na may setback tayo ay mataas pa rin ang narating natin,” Yap said.

Yap added these incentives not only serve as a reward for their achievements but also as an encouragement for their future endeavors, fostering a culture of excellence and perseverance among Benguet’s budding sports talents.

The cash incentives given to athletes by Yap is his own initiative while Benguet province have also started awarding incentives based on a provincial ordinance. Roderick Osis
