Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick “Pato” Gregorio expressed strong confidence that Team Philippines will surpass its previous medal output in the Asian Games, citing a formidable roster of national athletes and comprehensive preparation.
Speaking during his visit to the PSC training facility at Teacher’s Camp in Baguio City, Gregorio highlighted the ongoing anti-doping seminars in Manila as part of standard operating procedures to safeguard national athletes ahead of the continental meet noting that delegation departures are slated to begin between Sept. 9 and Sept. 10, with several sports disciplines starting competition early.
Targeting an improved performance over the four gold medals bagged in both the 2018 and 2022 editions, Gregorio underscored the country’s chances across multiple sports.
“Ang objective natin dito, malampasan natin ‘yung four golds noong 2018 at four golds noong 2022,” Gregorio said. “Kaya ba natin? Sa tingin ko oo. Pag-inantay lang natin, nandiyan ‘yung mga pambato natin.”
Gregorio pointed to a deep pool of medal contenders, including EJ Obiena, Hidilyn Diaz, the Yulo brothers, Alex Eala, and the defending champion Gilas Pilipinas men’s basketball team. He also identified potential contenders and surprise performers in combat sports such as taekwondo, jiujitsu, and other martial arts, alongside young prospects like Kyka Sanchez and emerging talents in skateboarding.
The PSC chief emphasized that government incentives under Republic Act 10699—including a 4-million-peso cash reward for Asian Games gold medalists, paired with presidential match funding—serve as strong moral and financial support.
However, Gregorio stressed that national pride remains the ultimate motivation for the athletes competing on the international stage.
“Lahat ng atletang ipinapadala natin sa Asian Games, lahat ‘yan may opportunity to get a medal. Lumalaban sila talaga para makakuha ng medalya at para makapagbigay ng karangalan sa ating bayan. ‘Yan ang pinakamaganda sa mga atleta natin—’yung gintong medalya, walang katumbas ‘yan,” ,” Gregorio said.
