PWDs take over LT as officials for a day

La Trinidad, Benguet—As part of the inclusivity program of the municipality, 39 persons with disabilities took their seat as officials for a day,  July 22 to serve in different capacities in the valley.

The Persons with Disabilities officials for a day (PDOFAD) were led by PWD Federation President Jason Bulasao as mayor and PWD Federation Vice President Llabres Guines as vice mayor, who served in the different departments of the municipality.

Serving in the Sangguniang Bayan were Adelle Telino, Ben Balang, Hector Chamos, Jeggie Mae Atelba, Delia Antonio, Michael Gorospe, Rafael Ganawed Jr., Yolanda Pespes, Marnellie Mangagid, and Isidro Luis, as among the PDOFAD.

During their meeting at the SB hall, the PDOFAD was able to pass seven proposals including the request to mayor Awingan to declare Oct. 12 of every year as orthopedic day and to urge all government and private institutions to make their buildings and infrastructures to be designed and constructed in accordance to Batas Pambansa Bldg. 344, which seeks to enhance access and mobility of PWDs.

Also proposed were the request for the mayor to deploy a permanent traffic enforcer or dedicated personnel to monitor, assist, and safeguard PWDs at designated blue lanes, PWD waiting areas, and PWD parking spaces in the town; and the request to Governor Melchor Diclas to assign a dedicated hospital staff or desk personnel at the lobby of the Benguet General Hospital to aid PWDs and their caregivers.

The PDOFAD also asked the SB to enact an ordinance establishing a municipal para games program for PWDs, and to enact an ordinance establishing a municipal scholarship program for qualified PWds and qualified children of PWDs.
The one-day PWD officials also requested the mayor to implement a one month temporary work immersion program for PWDs and parents or guardian of children with disabilities in the town.

The proposed resolutions were forwarded to the SB and the mayor for their appropriate action.

The PDOFAD is in line with the 48th National Disability Rights Week celebration with the theme: “Rights first, legislation forward— strategic action for equal participation and inclusive development.”
