The University of Baguio Cardinals opened their campaign in the Baguio – Benguet Educational Athletic League with a statement game after blasting Baguio College of Technology Atoms.
Right from the opening buzzer, the Cardinals meant business as they see k to reclaim the men’s basketball title with a masterful beating of the Atoms, 81 – 49 at CCDC gymnasium Thursday afternoon.
Jay De Guzman led the Cardinals with 22 points while John Espinosa and David Gaerlan chipped in eight points each.
Rolling off to a 25 – 9 advantage at the end of the first period, the Cardinals busted the game wide open and enjoyed a 59 – 22 lead going into the half time break.
While the Cardinals may have passed with flying color against the Atoms, head coach Kevin Orduna said the team has yet to reach their full potential and still needs to improve certain aspects of their game.
“We were able to execute some of our plays pero kulang pa rin sa communication and yun yung pwedeng impove pa ng team going into our next games,” said Orduna.
Orduna added while they will miss the services of four key players this year, he is still optimistic that the Cardinals can still compete for the championship this year against the defending champion Cordillera Career Development College Admirals.
“Naging maganda naman yung aming preparation during the pre-season and siguro kahit wala yung apat na players, I still believe na there is a light at the end of the tunnel,” added the former Cardinals.
Adrian Cauton meanwhile led the Atoms with his team high 16 points while Jaymark Domingo added seve markers. Roderick Osis
