As I sit upon a beauty salon, I remember how often we are set into standards of beauty and even gender.
The real beauty for women is set to standards of being princesses like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and not Fiona the Shrek. The whiter skin, the more beautiful! But what if you’re more of becoming Princess Athena the warrior princess in a supposed era of television shows where you and I belong to?
Just as I look at a billboard poster here, I see a lady with good eyebrows, high nose and good teeth – one that is reminiscent of youthfulness. Add a slim body to it then you’re in for a modelesque persona! Remember Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman and even Poison Ivy and Cat Woman? Fat chance, truth is – there are beauty standards like Moana as depicted in movies and yes, again, Fiona of Shrek.
I mean why do we put people in stereotypes and expect them to be like princesses and dolls? Except Chuckie’s partner doll which to a point is really scary!
Why can’t we be like the bratz with their big heads and small bodies? Of course, less the attitude of a brat.
Peoples’ mental health are affected by these stereotypes wired into our brains. Take for example the thought of being bullied because of how we look or talk or act. Even our children fell prey to these kinds of bullying.
Why do beauty queens before tend to be white women? Good thing now, even dark skinned girls make it to Ms. Universe queens. Everyone has a right to be who or what they are.
There’s no denying that ever since media
created these supposed “norms”, we laugh or react negatively. If we are not like Korean pop stars, we tend to be disliked. Even singers and actresses are so cut for perfection that anorexia is evident and their zest for life is waning.
Know that whoever you are, you are beautiful in every way. Just the same, you are handsome in every way. You might be fair-skinned and not skinny, to the people who value your worth – you are beautiful or handsome in every way. You are worthy to be you and worthy to live too despite what the world says and most especially, what your mind says!
Hugs to those who needed it the most and hope that the light you bear is not lost! Carry on and keep shining!
