LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Sablan seeks to extend its winning ways as it eyes a sweep of Tuba in the finals of the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup – Benguet Women’s V – League at the Benguet Sports Complex here Tuesday.
Most valuable player top contender Jasmynne Polon hopes to lead her top seeded Sablan which has yet to be beaten in the 13 – team league.
Polon, the best outside Hitter in last year’s national Private Schools Athletic Association, is expected to be at her best when she leads her squad to the romp on the upset conscious fourth seed Tuba, which needed a five – set victory on the erstwhile second seed La Trinidad.
In fact, Sablan just lost two sets in the 16 games it played, 12 in the elimination round and post season games.
Sablan has a formidable starting six unit composed of Polon, her two Baguio College of Technology team mates, Shery Estal and poker – faced Abigail Cunanan, a shoo – in to take the best middle blocker and setter awards, respectively, opposite hitter Hanna Mae Dumpit and outside hitter Anna Mae Laruan.
Dumpit has a strong case for the top opposite hitter award with her two – time best player and one post season recognition.
Sablan’s Jhesselyn Bayao and Jhanel Kate Dawal are also forces to reckon with as blockers for the Edrick Sofla mentored squad.
Out to stop the Sablan juggernauts are Mary Ann Atuban and Radinka Dumawor, who were Tuba’s one-two punch against the higher ranked Trinidad in their do-or-die match to earn the right to face Sablan.
Tuba lost to the top three seeds in the elimination round all in four sets.
“We are getting there, our team is getting the proper gelling,” said Atuban, a former member of the University of Baguio.
Atuban was the most exciting player during her time which she gave a glimpse of during the post season.
Tuba and Sablan start their best of three finals on Tuesday at 8:00 PM after the La Trinidad versus Kapangan match. CEGYCC Release
