The Warrior In You

Do genders really have effects to mental health and vice versa? Fast facts and trigger warning, cases of persons who committed suicide are mostly men. Why? Is it because men are not allowed to air their thoughts, feelings and grievances? They rather hold their feelings inside. But mind you, when the cup gets full of negative thoughts and feelings, there’s no place for good vibes. Then, the cup would just somehow burst unknowingly.
We celebrate with allies and friends of LGBTQIA+, it’s another July month where the rainbows and butterflies get symbollically important. A celebration of love and gender equality with all people regardless of who or what they are. You are accepted beyond words.
This is also a month to celebrate with people who have disabilities – a minority and marginalized sector of our society. A community that is profoundly extraordinary and gifted. Although, we sometimes fail to realize this. To my co-equals in the disability communities, you are loved. You will get through things with much hope and joy.
Speaking of minority and marginalization, what if you are gay or a part of the LGBTQIA community and is also suffering from a disability? Will that be called double marginalization as equal to double jeopardy? I think that there is no room to pity one’s self. As long as you’re not stepping on other people’s rights just be who you are.
As a gender and development and mental health advocate, we know that life is hard and sometimes accepting realities are much harder. So take it easy, trust the process and find yourself as who you are. After all it’s not always about others, but yourself. That is the true essence of self-care – how you see your own self.
To all queer and confused with acceptance and trauma peeking through, you’ll figure it out in time. Remember, whoever you are you deserve respect. Whatever choices you have, you have a right to be happy.
Look at yourself in the mirror, pat yourself at the back – that is, if you can reach your back less the back aches! Gender and mental health are closely linked in various cases so be true to yourself and accept yourself because no one can fill up that void unless you find yourself.
Grateful and cheering on all my fellow warriors no matter the gender or disability. What you are and what you went through is insignificant compared to what you will be in the future. You are enough!
