Bloom where you are planted

A documentary by filmmaker Noni Abao explores the interconnected yet fractured journeys of three activists whose lives are deeply rooted in the Cagayan Valley Region of the Philippines.

For development worker Agnes, jailed mother-artist-activist Amanda, and slain peace consultant Randy, the region is a workplace, a chosen haven, and a birthplace. Yet, despite their profound dedication, all three find their paths back home relentlessly blocked.

The documentary is part of the as part of the 21st edition of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival, competing full length category.

Abao’s film delves into the realities facing these individuals: one is pursued by the government, another is imprisoned, and the third was tragically killed on his journey home. These activists, united by their commitment to the people of Cagayan, embody a struggle for justice and community-building that comes at a steep personal cost.

The documentary meticulously traces the pit stops, obstacles, and detours that define their paths, illustrating the long, arduous road ahead in their collective effort to rebuild a home with the people of Cagayan. The narrative not only highlights the work they do to shape the region but also how the region, in turn, has fundamentally shaped who they are.

Ultimately, the film is a powerful exploration of their disrupted connections to home—a tragedy shared by many who dedicate their lives to social change. Amid the adversity, however, it shines a light on their enduring resilience. It’s a testament to the spirit of those who, even when pursued, jailed, or killed, never give up on the dream of a true, just home for their community.
